Listening to Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Voices: Experiences and Expectations of Churches

This report presents the findings of a survey conducted with members of the Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities, focusing on their experiences with churches in the UK. It offers an honest and at times challenging reflection on how churches are perceived, and the barriers many face when trying to engage with faith communities.

While many respondents identify as Christian and value their faith deeply, experiences of exclusion, stereotyping, and discrimination continue to affect whether and how they participate in church life. The feedback highlights both the hurt caused by past encounters and the strong desire for churches to become more welcoming, inclusive, and culturally aware.

This report is intended as a tool for churches across denominations to listen, learn, and take practical steps toward being places where these communities feel respected and included. The recommendations shared come directly from the voices of those most affected and offer a clear path forward.

We hope this work will support meaningful change and stronger relationships between churches and the communities they serve.
