This study (2022 – 2024) undertaken by researchers from Anglia Ruskin University and Lancaster University sheds light on the issues affecting the engagement with Local Authority children’s services with Roma individuals, families and communities.
I attended the launch webinar hosted by the Centre for Child & Family Justice Research (4.2.25) and was struck by the professional approach of the researchers and a genuine concern that the fear and mistrust of Children’s Services on the part of Roma people, and the culturally unaware processes of UK systems, may have negative impacts on Roma children in vulnerable situations.

This report highlights the current reality, summarised in Key Findings, but also goes on to suggest positive steps for improving this reality in the section “Recommendations for Improvements”. Although these recommendations are primarily directed towards LA Children’s Services, they could also be usefully considered to ensure that church safeguarding policies are implemented in a culturally appropriate way, effecting the protection of children, rather than the alienation of Roma families.
